DIPLOMA HISTORY

Diploma programs are very popular all over the world. The word Diploma means folded paper. This must have come into existence as decades ago most of the degrees, or diplomas for that matter, were usually issued in the form of a folded paper.

Diplomas are conferred by institutions in order to mark and certify a person’s abilities in a certain field of work. Sometimes diplomas are also conferred in order to mark the honor to a person for his achievements or contributions towards something. Receiving a diploma marks a person’s entrance onto a new level in life.

As far as the history of diplomas is concerned, there goes a saying “hang your sheepskin on the wall”. This saying signifies the fact that earlier diplomas were made up of the skin of the sheep. Sometimes the skin of other animals was also used to make diplomas. The saying is basically used to ask the person who holds the diploma to show his diploma; and thereby show the skills he or she might have acquired during the time spent by the person during learning the particular set of skills.

A diploma usually carries a written transcript stating that the person thereby specified (the name of the person is mentioned on the document) happens to have acquired a certain set of skills, become able to do something as a result of certain training or happens to have made certain contribution or achievement in a given field. Diplomas are usually valid for the whole life time but some diplomas also carry the expiration clause. These diplomas are valid for certain time periods and upon the completion of that time period, that particular diploma is deemed to have expired. The validity and authenticity of the diploma is usually marked by the seal or stamp of the issuing authority and the signature of the authorized person. In earlier times the diplomas were handwritten.

The forgery of diplomas is also a very widespread phenomenon, majorly because of the high importance of some diplomas in various fields of society and life a whole. This has led to the creation of a brand new field of science that deals with checking and verifying the authenticity of certain diplomas and documents. This field of science is called “Diplomatics”. The science of diplomatics is of utmost importance as this is the way with which scientists can verify whether any particular deal or diploma and any other documented treaty which might have a great deal of importance in historical events, was real or just a work of fake documentation. Diplomas have been historically awarded for the grant of land to individuals or entities. With the importance of such historically important lands and the rising costs of property, the study of diplomas which is diplomatics has become all the more important. Diplomatics seems to be a very interesting branch of science in which the professional has to know a great deal about Old English as well.

Diplomas basically have different accurate meanings in different countries but usually the essence of the word diploma, more or less, remains the same.
