Diploma Museum
Here is our first
diploma/certificate "museum", we will update it periodically. The
purpose of this small museum is to show you diplomas/certificates in
different styles and layout over the period from 1930s to now.
The oldest one we have worked with date back to
1930s, the style is quite different from what you have seen
today.
Antique:
Before 1980s
If you still hold one, the paper must turned yellow already. Hand
writing and wax seal was very common before the 1950s. Some were
written/printed in Latin and printed on a sheepskin. Frankly, this is
the period that diplomas really "worth" something.
Traditional: 1980s-2000
This is a period of "boring", although technology breaks
through, but during this period, there was not much variation on diploma
styles. One of the major inventions on printing technique was gold foil
stamping developed at the University of Iowa in the 1980s. Diploma size
was getting smaller. Since education became affordable, school
couldn't find enough real parchment paper (animal skin), and most of the university
diploma or certificate was printed on paper, or textured paper.
Modern: 2000s to Now
At the beginning of 2000, many universities redesign their diplomas.
Diplomas become much more colorful. Although some still kepp their
tradition, some became a bit stylish. This is a period that
many printing techniques being utilized. Part of the reason is that
this give a better look on diplomas and certificates, another is
that it makes replication harder.
